Travel Protection

Travel insurance provides financial protection against unexpected events that can occur before or during your trip. Here are some reasons why buying travel insurance can be beneficial:

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Life is unpredictable, and sometimes you may need to cancel or cut short your trip due to unexpected events such as illness, injury, or death of a family member. Travel insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for covered reasons.
  • Medical Emergencies: If you fall ill or get injured while traveling, medical expenses can be exorbitant, especially if you require emergency medical evacuation. Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, including hospital stays, emergency medical transportation, and doctor visits.
  • Lost or Delayed Baggage: Airlines occasionally misplace or delay baggage. Travel insurance can provide coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage, as well as reimburse you for essential items you need to purchase while your luggage is delayed.
  • Travel Delays: Delays due to weather, mechanical issues, or other unforeseen circumstances can disrupt your travel plans and result in additional expenses for accommodation, meals, and transportation. Travel insurance can compensate you for these extra costs.
  • Emergency Assistance: Travel insurance often includes 24/7 emergency assistance services, such as helping you find medical care, replacing lost passports, or arranging emergency transportation.
  • Coverage for Adventure Activities: If you plan to engage in adventurous activities like skiing, scuba diving, or mountain climbing, standard travel insurance may not cover accidents related to these activities. However, you can purchase specialized travel insurance policies that provide coverage for specific adventure sports.
  • Peace of Mind: Travel insurance provides peace of mind knowing that you're financially protected against unforeseen events that could otherwise ruin your trip and leave you with significant expenses.

“I don’t need travel insurance. We don’t plan to cancel our trip.”----No one ever plans to cancel a trip, if you planned to cancel, you wouldn’t be booking a trip! We can’t predict the unforeseen and the insurance needs to be in place before the unexpected happens.

“We’re going no matter what.”---You may assume you will travel no matter the circumstances, but if there is a sudden death of a close family member or you have an unexpected illness or injury, you won’t be able to make the trip. I don’t want to scare you, but it is important to know reality is something that could happen that would impact your ability to take the trip. Alternatively, if their cruise line or travel supplier goes bankrupt before their scheduled trip, it doesn’t matter how much they want to go, if the boat doesn’t show up, they aren’t going.

“My primary health insurance will cover me.”---Many travelers, especially those who have not been out of the country before, don’t realize that their domestic health insurance does not cover them abroad. Some insurance plans may not even cover if they are in the US but out of network. Our single trip plans offer primary medical coverage while on their trip so they have coverage for emergency medical expenses.

“I have coverage through my credit card.”---Credit card companies specialize in credit cards, not insurance. Often credit card coverage only applies to the cardholder, not any family members or even authorized users. Some may even deny coverage if the entire trip was not booked with the card, while others only offer assistance without reimbursement for missed services or out of pocket expenses. You should locate the insurance policy for their credit card and compare it to RoamRight coverage, often the two don’t compare.

“Insurance is too expensive. I can find it cheaper online.”---There are travel insurance aggregator sites that will find the cheapest insurance option available, but often you get what you pay for. The travel insurance is an additional service you offer them from a reputable company you know and trust. If they are wary about putting out all of the insurance money up front when they haven’t even paid for their entire trip yet, we allow you to Insure As You Go. This allows you to just insure the initial deposit they’ve paid so far and lock in those time sensitive benefits such as the pre-ex waiver, and then as they make additional payments toward the trip, you can modify their insured trip cost and make additional premium payments as well. It's like creating a payment plan for their coverage so they are only insured for what they’ve paid.

“Insurance doesn’t work.”---Travel insurance isn't a catch-all solution; it only covers specific scenarios that are listed and verifiable in the policy. If you are skeptical about insurance due to a bad past experience or doubts its efficacy, what is your backup plan. How will you handle sudden medical expenses abroad? Are you okay with losing your entire trip investment if they need to cancel and face steep penalties? Insurance might not cover every eventuality, but it's certainly better than no coverage at all.
